MfD: Czechs reluctant to help victims of domestic violence

Prague, Oct 17 (CTK) - Only 56 percent of Czechs are ready to help victims of domestic violence, according to a poll conducted by the polling institute Median, daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes yesterday.

"In fact, the number of those ready to act in a real situation is even lower," police psychologist Ludmila Cirtkova is quoted as saying.

"There is a difference between what those polled declare and what they really do," Cirtkova said.

Out of those who are not ready to intervene, most of them argued that it was none of their business, MfD writes.

They also said those in question should resolve their problems themselves, it adds.

These answers were most often given by men, while women mostly said they did not know what to do, the poll has found.

On the other hand, the number of "rescuers" has risen over the past 20 years, Marketa Vitousova, from the White Circle of Safety, told the paper.

The victims' neighbours and relatives come for advice on what to do, Vitousova said.
